Operational risk, organisational resilience, and security in high-risk environments

These were the central themes of the conference held on June 3, 2025, at the historic campus of the War Studies University in Warsaw — an institution originally founded in the 18th century by King Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last king of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and a key figure of the Enlightenment era in Central Europe.

Tomasz Kapuściński, Vice President of NaviRisk, represented the company during the expert panel and shared practical insights on how organisations can effectively prepare to operate in unstable environments.

The conference, titled “Operational Risk and Organisational Resilience – How to Build Strong Structures in an Unstable World”, was held in cooperation with the Academic Centre for Strategic Analyses and the Centre for the Study of National Security Threats at the War Studies University (ASzWoj). It brought together representatives from the public, private, humanitarian, and media sectors.

We would like to thank Dr Magdalena El Ghamari for her professional moderation and thought-provoking questions, which set the tone for a dynamic and substantive discussion.

During the conference, participants explored key topics shaping today’s approach to organisational security:

  • new types of threats, including disinformation, sabotage, and cyber incidents;
  • the challenges of operating in conflict zones or destabilised areas;
  • the importance of organizational duty of care toward employees;
  • specifics of operational insurance in high-risk regions;
  • cultural security and cross-cultural preparation prior to missions;
  • practical aspects of pre-operational documentation and business continuity management.

The Vice President of NaviRisk emphasised that in times of uncertainty, the role of proactive risk management and responsible operational planning becomes increasingly important. The exchange of perspectives with experts from various sectors — including Dr Aleksander Olech (Defence24), Łukasz Szozda (Polish Humanitarian Action), and war photographer Wojciech Grzędziński — highlighted how different viewpoints can complement one another.

The conference proved to be an important space for integrating knowledge across security, crisis management, humanitarian aid, and military operations. The main takeaway? Building organizational resilience is not a single-sector effort. It is a shared responsibility of leaders, risk analysts, security professionals, and those managing missions and personnel.
